Director Rian Johnson has revealed where development is currently at knives out 3 while teasing plans to Knives Out 4 and beyond.

After the controversy surrounding Rian Johnson’s adventure into the Star Wars galaxy with The Last Jedithe director struck gold with his Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery knives out – starring Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc.

Following the success and acclaim that knives out attracted, Johnson quickly began making plans for Detective Blanc’s return in new standalone mystery sequels. That even caught the attention of streaming giant Netflix, which beat Amazon and Apple to a $450 million deal for exclusive rights to knives out 2 🇧🇷 3🇧🇷

Recently, the first of these sequels hit Netflix in the form of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mysterywhich took Benoit Blanc to Greece to investigate a new case filled with twists and turns and a cast of MCU veterans.

with reception for onion glass already proving to be resoundingly positive (it currently holds a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), talks have begun about when the next promised streaming sequel will arrive. And while it’s too early for an exact date, Johnson has already spoken about developing a knives out 3🇧🇷

In the last festive issue of RadioTimes, knives out and onion glass director Rian Johnson offered an exciting update on the development of the franchise’s third film, and touched on the prospect of more future installments beyond that.

After being asked if he had any ideas for knives out 3Johnson revealed that it is “Just starting to figure out what’s next.”

The murder-mystery director added that the third film will be the last in the Netflix contract, but he “don’t see this as a trilogy” and hopes to continue with the franchise “for how long [they] I can:”

“We have one more film in our contract with Netflix, but I don’t see it as a trilogy. I see it as an ongoing thing. Whereas Daniel [Craig] and I’m having fun and inventing something new and exciting each time, we’ll keep doing it as long as we can.”

After the success of 2019 knives outJohnson struck a $450 million deal with Netflix for the next two films in the franchise to go to the streamer.

knives out Star Daniel Craig was then asked if he hopes to play Detective Blanc for the same amount of time he played James Bond, which was 15 years. The British actor revealed that future prospects were “discussed at length,” and he hopes to keep making more while audiences are entertained:

“I mean, I should be really lucky! We’ve discussed this at length and would love to continue making these knives out films. As long as we can keep making people laugh, we will.”

When will Knives Out 3 be released on Netflix?

Rian Johnson indicated that the development in knives out 3 it’s in the early stages as he’s just started to piece together his ideas. This apparently suggests he hasn’t started work on the script yet, potentially putting Benoit Blanc’s next mystery at some point in the future.

However, the franchise seems to be the director’s main commitment at the moment, having even set aside his own Star Wars trilogy to focus on developing the sequels. So the script could move forward quickly, depending on how quickly Johnson conceptualizes the next batch of characters, mysteries, and twists.

As there was a three year gap between 2019 releases knives out and 2022 onion glassthe threequel could be released in 2025. However, as development on the first follow-up was hampered by the pandemic and Daniel Craig’s commitments to No Time to Die🇧🇷 knives out 3 could come even sooner.

But unfortunately Knives Out 4 may be accompanied by a longer wait as the deal with Netflix will already be done by then. However, with Johnson having netted $100 million from his deal for the first two sequels, he and Netflix could opt to quickly renew – as long as onion glass and its follow-up succeeds in streaming.

There is still no way to say what Benoit Blanc’s next case will be, as knives out 3 will be entirely disconnected from the last two films with a new mystery and cast. Though there’s certainly still more development to be made for Craig’s Southern detective, particularly after the recent revelations about his character.

onion glass took the first dip into the weirdness of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc with the reveal of his partner Phillip, played by British icon Hugh Grant. Johnson has previously suggested that Blanc’s sexuality could influence more knives out 3indicating that Grant may be the first actor outside of Craig to reappear in the franchise.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is streaming now, exclusively on Netflix.
